Golden Mile

Glenis Willmott MEP and leader of the Labour Party in Europe will visit Belgrave Road, often referred to as the Golden Mile, in Leicester on the 3rd of June to support local businesses, residents and community leaders, in an effort to highlight the recent problems facing the area.

Mrs Willmott held a meeting with community leaders and business owners a few months ago about the decline of this once thriving part of the city, and was pleased to accept an invitation to visit the area concerned.

The Golden Mile has been blighted of late with robberies and other anti-social behaviour problems, which is keeping people away. This very important cultural quarter should be an attraction for visitors to the city, but has suffered a decline as a result of these on-going issues.

The visit which will be attended by the newly elected Mayor, Peter Soulsby and Keith Vaz MP,aims to highlight the importance of the Golden Mile as an area that once attracted visitors from all over the world.

Mrs Willmott will address an audience of community leaders, shop owners and local residents regarding EU funding and lend her support to the campaign to breathe new life into the area.

Mrs Willmott said “the Golden Mile is an area of rich cultural importance to Leicester, but unfortunately it has been in decline since the spate of robberies took place’

She went on to say:

“This once thriving part of the city is as important as the cultural quarters in London and Birmingham and everything should be done to restore it to its former glory”
